Overview

The Hon. Treasurer of Helsby Community Sports Club, Aaron Ferguson ACA, has confirmed his intention to step down from his role to support a growing family and burgeoning work commitments.

The Club are seeking a qualified accountant to replace Aaron, effective 1 April 2023.

About the Club

Helsby Community Sports Club are an incorporated Community Amateur Sports Club nestled in the heart of Helsby village. We promote and support a range of high quality, active sports including Tennis, Running, Rugby, Football, Snooker and Bowls, as well as providing unsurpassed facilities for the wider community.

The Club is structured as a company limited by guarantee, which owns and operates a trading subsidiary that manages our facilities. These include our sports pitches, bar, function room and clubhouse. Annual turnover is approaching £500,000.

About the Role

The Club faces an exciting, dynamic period. Having moved into its new site in December 2020 and incorporated in May 2021 the Board and various committees have spent some time getting to know the new facilities and putting the club on a sound operational and financial footing, including the development of several financial systems and processes.

In addition, the club intends to complete a merger with its individual sporting sections in March 2023, providing a single entity offering a wide range of sports with several organisational and strategic benefits.

Our new Treasurer will inherit a stable club with sound financial and operational systems. Their focus will be on our growth as we map out our strategic plan for the club over the next few years. As well as inputting into strategic decision making, our Treasurer is responsible for:

  • Maintenance of bookkeeping records for the Club and trading subsidiary
  • Payroll reporting and payments
  • VAT return preparation and submission
  • Preparing management accounts
  • Scrutinising the operations budget and monitoring financial performance
  • Advising the Board on routine finance and tax matters
  • Bank account management and payment approval
  • Preparing and submitting financial statements and Corporation Tax returns
  • Reporting to and attending Board and Committee meetings as appropriate

For year ended November 2022 onwards the Club’s financial statements will be independently examined, providing arms-length support for their preparation and submission. It is intended that year ended November 2022 will be filed ahead of the new Treasurer’s appointment.

The Club’s finances are managed via Xero cloud accounting and the Hon. Treasurer is supported for bookkeeping and payroll by the Club’s employed staff. Opportunities exist to seek additional commercial support depending on the candidate’s strengths and experience.

The Treasurer will be supported by a strong Board of volunteers that draws on experience from a wide range of professions and backgrounds.

In addition, the Treasurer will be supported informally by the incumbent for as long as required, who remains local to the Club and an active advisor.

Requirements and Appointment

Due to the size of the Club the Board are seeking a qualified accountant with an CCAB recognised qualification.

Experience of non-profit organisations is welcome, and experience of HMRC’s CASC regime is particularly valuable, but is not required. Experience of the hospitality sector would also be an asset.

A sporting background isn’t necessary, but enthusiasm for our vision and goals is essential.

The role could support a remote volunteer where appropriate, but would benefit from physical attendance

The role is unpaid but expenses are reimbursed.

It is intended to co-opt the selected candidate onto the Board in April 2023. They will then be subject to recurring election at our AGMs, usually held January / February each year. Appointment terms are for 12 months.
